Three Peaker Challenge

Lost in the Piers Gill Area - 26th September 2006

6/44: 27/9/06 ( 12.12 a.m. ) - Tuesday

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were called shortly after midnight to search for a single male fellwalker who was attempting the 3 Peaks Challenge and was overdue.  He and his fellow challenger had already completed Ben Nevis the previous day and had set off to climb Scafell Pike around 5.00 p.m. that evening.  The alarm was raised by the missing walkers companion who had decided to turn back.  Following a limited search during the night a further search involving 20 team members located the man on the side of Piers Gill at 8.15 a.m. The RAF helicopter from Boulmer was unable to assist during the night because of low cloud.  A second RAF helicopter based at Wasdale Head for the week was put on standby next morning but not needed.  The missing walker was uninjured and was escorted back to his companion in the Wasdale valley.    Also see video footage here

Nearly back down off the fell, cloud now lifting (9.00 a.m.) - the found walker is the gentleman in the cut -off trousers

Tired after a long night but pleased that we had located him safe and well. - bag on right is the warm clothing survival kit that we carry on searches.

Back at the vehicles at Brackenclose.  The two 3 Peakers on the right hand side, presumably off to complete Snowdon

Refreshments at the Wasdale Head Inn after the search.  Many thanks to Howard Christie, owner of the hotel for his hospitality and Adam - bacon butties and lots of sweet tea.........I can still taste them....MMMmmmmmm.  A quick energy stop then off to work.
